If you think back on times you have injured yourself or broken something valuable, you will likely remember a good number of incidents that occurred inside your home. Some accidents were perhaps so unusual that you did not dream of filing a claim with your insurance. However, you may wish that you had after finding out exactly what is covered by an OH homeowners insurance policy.
Here are five examples of surprising things that are covered by home insurance.
1. Unidentified Falling Objects
While your homeowners insurance company would undoubtedly deny claims that an alien spacecraft damaged your roof, they may reimburse you for damages and personal injuries that other falling objects cause. Examples of items sent into the air by natural forces or other people include the following:
- Burning debris expelled from fireworks
- Pieces of satellites or spacecraft
- Meteorites
- Ash and rocks from volcanic eruptions
- Hailstones
- Cannonballs
2. Drone Damages
Your OH homeowners insurance also may cover damage you cause with your own flying objects. One risk of using a drone is inadvertently hitting other people or their pets and injuring them. Even if the incident does not occur at your residence, your insurance may still protect you. It also may cover court costs if your neighbors claim that your flying machine infringes on their right to privacy, so long as you do not spy on them on purpose.
3. Terrorist Attacks
Most policies specifically exclude acts of war. However, terrorists do commit violent acts against civilians during times when the country is otherwise at peace. Even if you think that a 911-style incident is beyond unlikely in your neighborhood, certain thefts may actually apply if they fit the FBI’s definition of domestic terrorism. Classification as terrorist activity is easier to come by than you might think because it only depends on whether the culprits stole or damaged your belongings as part of furthering a certain ideology.
4. Thefts Away From Home
Keeping receipts and a list of your possessions makes it easier to file a claim when someone robs your home. However, you might want to extend your list-keeping to objects stored in various other locations. For example, your homeowner’s policy might cover items while in the following places:
- College dorm rooms
- Summer camps
- Vehicles
- Storage units
- School lockers
5. Spoiled Food
Don’t expect your insurance agent to be sympathetic to money you lost by forgetting about food in the back of the refrigerator. Unexpectedly losing electricity for an extended period of time is another story, and a claim of a refrigerator full of spoiled food is one that that your insurance company might listen to. One caveat is that lack of power due to nonpayment of your bill is not a legitimate cause of a power outage.
